Marketing can be a very interesting animal regardless of the product or service being sold. Marketers have to get their message across in a way that is as appealing to customers as possible without ever touching on anything negative. Therefore, the words and phrases they choose are very important. Take the term ‘detox’ as it relates to skincare. Telling consumers that a product detoxifies the skin is considered good from a marketing standpoint. But what does it really mean?

Detox is a term that can be a Catch-22 for skincare marketing. A company may advertise an all-natural detox mask intended to deep clean and rejuvenate the skin, with one consumer seeing it as a positive thing while another is taken aback by the idea that the skin needs detoxification.

What Detox Really Means

Truth be told, an all-natural detox mask does not really remove toxins if the dictionary definition of a toxin is being used. Why? Because a toxin is technically a poisonous substance that is produced as a direct result of the metabolic action of a living organism. The highly toxic venom of a rattlesnake comes to mind.

Of course, there are environmental toxins as well. These are generally accepted as being chemicals known to cause cancer or disrupt the endocrine system. These are things such as lead, asbestos, and even parabens.

The reality is that the human face is not teaming with either natural or environmental toxins. When a manufacturer markets a deep-cleansing mask or organic facial oil that detoxifies the skin, what they are really talking about is addressing the presence of free radicals. The best skincare products contain an abundance of antioxidants known to fight free radicals.

Antioxidants Are Good for the Skin

We understand free radicals to be certain kinds of unstable atoms that have an adverse effect on human health. Science has proven a link between free radicals and things such as inflammation, lines and wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Free radicals have even been associated with certain kinds of cancers. In the arena of skincare, however, it is the effects of aging that are the real priority.

Organic facial oils and all-natural detox masks intended to reduce the effects of aging are really focusing on free radicals. The ingredients in these products control free radicals to reduce damage to the skin that becomes more noticeable with age. This means a more even complexion, fewer lines and wrinkles, less skin inflammation, healthy production of collagen, and so on.

Don’t Forget Deep Cleansing

Along with the idea of detoxification comes the concept of deep cleansing. This is another term that is widely misunderstood. For example, organic facial oils do not necessarily penetrate the pores any more effectively than standard soap. Their deep-cleansing capabilities are found more in the properties of the oils and how they deal with dead skin cells, dirt, and debris.

Put a little vegetable oil on your finger and then dip your finger in dirt. What you observe is a perfect illustration of how organic facial oils work. The molecules in the oil penetrate the pores and bond to dirt and debris. They also bond to excess sebum that might be on the skin. When the facial oil is wiped away, it carries the dirt, debris, and excess sebum with it.

Marketers can say just about anything they want about their products within certain boundaries. As a consumer, it pays to know what certain marketing terms mean when you go shopping. This is especially true in skincare. The term ‘detox’ is but one example.
