What other feeling is better than having a swim on a hot summers day? We believe that there isn’t. However, if you want to have a functioning and sanitized pool for many years to come, you need to make sure that you maintain it properly daily. Nothing is less glamorous than having dirty pool walls, cloudy water and algae build-up.

If you do not want to waste money on a professional to fix what is broken you should put in your schedule pool cleaning every day. Do not worry, the guidelines that we will enlist below are not difficult to follow. Nonetheless, this does not mean that you shouldn’t spend some time to check and clean it properly. The better you take care of your things, the more years you will have it. Having a clean pool isn’t a luxury but a need. Swimming in dirty pool water can cause skin and eyes irritation. As well as, you can develop stomach problems because E.Coli bacteria can linger around in the water. We strongly recommend that you follow the instructions accordingly.

Check pool equipment

All you have to do is take a quick peek at the situation. You do not have to be an expert to realize that the water pump does not work properly and that the filter is clogged with debris. Nonetheless, if you believe that a glance is not enough, you should take a closer look at the water pressure. If it’s low, it means that the water level is low, the basket is full or that the valves are closed. Whereas, if the water pressure is high, it simply means that the water filter is clogged with leafs or there’s too much oil build-up. It’s much better if you solve the situation fast rather than leave it as it is. Here are some quick tips:

  • Listen carefully if the pump is making weird noises
  • Check the position of the valves
  • Make sure that water level is suitable, to begin with
  • Water pressure can be affected if you run the water through things such as solar heaters

Keep track of water level

It’s natural for this level to fluctuate. Especially if you live in the states where there’s a lot of rain and rainstorms or if you have children that enjoy diving and playing in the pool. You should be pleased to know that you can bring up the level by simply adding more water with a hose or anything else you find suitable. If you find the water level too high, you can purchase a pump in order to drain the excess water. What’s important to note is that you need to re-check the chemical levels because it’s inevitable that they will change. Remember these tips:

  • The water levels are easy to maintain
  • If you do not want to risk damaging your pool walls with an extra pump, speak to a professional
  • Purchase a pool cover if you do not want to deal with water fluctuation from the rain
  • Don’t be afraid to deal with it yourself

Check the chemicals in the water

If you are a control freak like the rest of us. You should check these readings every day, to ensure that the water you or your children are swimming in, is safe. The main chemicals that you should keep in check are Chlorine and pH levels because they can be as damaging as dirty water. It’s general knowledge that too much of those chemicals does more harm to the human body than good. We strongly recommend that you maintain a pH level that is around 7.4-7.7 and the chlorination level should be around 1-2 ppm. You will be pleased to know that you can return the levels to normal by yourself and you do not need to call in a professional.

However, if you are concerned about calcium levels you can take a sample of your pool water to the nearest pool shop and they will advise you on what to do next. It’s better if you keep the level at a standard rate because too much of it can build hard scales that are difficult to break or clean. Below are some tips you should know:

  • High pH levels can cause skin and eyes irritation
  • High Alkalinity levels can cause water cloudiness
  • Make sure that you purchase reliable test strips
  • Never let your kids swim in water that has dangerous chemical levels

Extra tips

There are few extra tips you should know in order to keep your pool to the standards you want. To keep the swimming pool for many years to come you just need to take care of it as much as you can. Take these into consideration:

  • Keep a tennis ball in the pool because it will absorb oils
  • For a cheap chemical fix try baking soda
  • Take care of the pipes as well
  • Never be afraid of taking matters into your own hands
